“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”

-Henry David Thoreau, Walden

A friend asked me today, "Gabriel, how did you spend your 4th of July?" Well it began like this. First, Dad and I decided to take a hike down to the Roanoke River.

The day for our hike was very humid, hot, and wet. Dad and I hiked about 2 miles down from the Ronoke Rapids Lake dam by the old rusty bridge. When we arrived at our destination, put our packs down and quickly hydrated by drinking water from our canteens. After that we decided to eat a little lunch.

We each poured an even 2 cups of water in our canteen cups to boil our noodles. We were using amazing alcohol stoves (a.k.a. penny stove) that we made earlier in the year out of soda cans. By this time thunder clouds were building up and the air begain to cool down, the wind begain to blow and the rain fell lightly. We packed up our packs and pushed on to our destination.

We climbed down to the river's edge, removed our boots and cooled our feet in the water. Rain began to fall very hard and we decided to hike out.

It was a great 4th. Happy birthday America! God bless America!
