“Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.”

-Henry David Thoreau, Walden

The US Marines are rough on their gear, that's a fact. The USMC FILBE Assault Pack is built to last and it was designed to be carried on shorter missions by the United States Marine Corps.

Many of the Marines that we've spoken to call this a "day pack". Truly, it feels more like a 24-48hr pack. This assault pack by Eagle Industries is a part of the FILBE (Family of Improved Load Bearing Equipment) system that can be worn alone, over body armor, and can be attached to the larger FILBE main pack for longer field operations.

The USMC 3 Day Assault pack has easy zippered access to the larger internal compartment space and a smaller outer compartment. There are also two pockets in the bottom corners inside the main compartment for gear storage as well as a larger pocket that can carry a radio, hydration carrier or other gear. Behind that, there is a zippered compartment that contains a plastic frame sheet that adds stiffness to the back of the bag.

The USMC FILBE assault Pack is made from durable Cordura Nylon. MOLLE/PALS webbing is sewn on each side and to the front of the pack so that additional pouches and items can be added as needed. Contoured shoulder straps, sternum strap, quick-release buckles, padded back, and buckled waist belt round out this comfortable 3-day assault pack.

I carry only what I consider to be essential items as space comes at a premium in this back. It's fairly small, measuring at 20" x 14"x 8" and weighs 3.5lbs empty. I have to keep in mind that when selecting my gear for this pack that I only need to take what I am certain to use, there's simply no room for fluff and "I might need this one day in the future" items. Truly, it feels more like a 24-48hr pack.

Most of the time I use my poncho as my shelter but I may be moving away from that mindset because when it rains my only option is to wear the poncho and leave my gear exposed at camp or stay under the poncho until the rain stops. Either way, that is more of a hindrance than a help and I believe that I'll add in an additional tarp or Gore-tex, perhaps strapped to the bottom, in this kit.

I truly like this USMC assault pack. From the coyote brown color to the ability to strap it atop my FILBE main ruck makes this pack a definite go-to when hunting or patrolling our property. I think this is a great 3 day/72 hour bug out bag and an excellent 24-48hr pack.
