We experienced another life-altering outage by Facebook today. I noticed on my phone first that I had been logged out. Then, my browser. I tried resetting my password. Everything failed. Wondering if something sinister was unfolding, I began to inventory my preps in my mind. Did you do the same? If not, here are some things to consider.
Preps to Think About
Water: Aim for at least one gallon per person daily for drinking and sanitation purposes. Consider water purification tablets or filters as well.
First Aid Kit: Include bandages, antiseptics, pain relievers, prescription medications, and any specific medical supplies needed for your family's health concerns. Have supplies, and the knowledge to use them. You are and will always be your first responder.
Firearms: Weapons, ammo, and training. You are and will always be your first responder. Depending on personal preference and local laws, consider items like pepper spray, or other means of protection.
Flashlights and Batteries: Have multiple flashlights with extra batteries to ensure you have light during power outages.
Multi-tool and Basic Tools: A Swiss army knife or multi-tool can be handy for various tasks. Basic tools like a hammer, wrench, and screwdriver are also useful.
Emergency Radio: A battery-powered or hand-crank emergency radio can provide crucial information during disasters when other forms of communication may be down.
Personal Hygiene Items: Stock up on toiletries such as soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products, and hand sanitizer.
Warm Clothing and Blankets: Have enough warm clothing, blankets, and sleeping bags to stay comfortable during cold weather or if heating is unavailable.
Fire Starters: Matches, lighters, and fire starters are essential for cooking and staying warm. Include fire extinguishers for safety.
Cash and Important Documents: Keep some cash in small denominations and copies of important documents like identification, insurance policies, and medical records in a waterproof container.
Fuel: Store extra fuel for generators, vehicles, and cooking stoves. Be sure to rotate fuel periodically to prevent it from going bad. If you have the means, generators, battery banks, or solar arrays.
Cooking Supplies: Portable stoves, fuel canisters, and cookware suitable for outdoor cooking if necessary.
Seeds for Gardening: Non-GMO, heirloom seeds for growing vegetables and fruits can provide a sustainable food source in the long term.
Entertainment and Comfort Items: Books, games, toys for children, and other forms of entertainment can help maintain morale during stressful situations.
Remember to customize your prepping supplies based on your family's specific needs, the potential emergencies you might face, and the environment in which you live. Regularly check and rotate supplies to ensure everything remains fresh and functional.
