Bear Creek Arsenal BC-202 .22 WMR Rifle Review: A Compact Powerhouse

Bear Creek Arsenal has carved a niche for itself with reliable, budget-friendly firearms, and the .22 WMR 16" SS Heavy Threaded Barrel Rifle is no exception. Designed for versatility and performance, this rifle is a standout choice for varmint hunters, target shooters, and anyone looking for an affordable but effective Ruger-style 10/22 .22 WMR/Magnum rifle.

First Impressions

The rifle’s 16-inch stainless steel barrel is robust with a few scratches. I assume this is during the machining phase, but overall the barrel is aesthetically pleasing. The threaded barrel opens up customization options, especially for those who want to add a suppressor for quieter range sessions. With a heavy profile, the barrel minimizes recoil and adds stability, making it ideal for precision shooting.

The anodized black finish gives it a clean, professional look while ensuring corrosion resistance, a big plus for outdoor enthusiasts who might encounter harsh environments.

Performance and Accuracy

The 1:16 twist rate is well-matched to the .22 WMR round, delivering consistent accuracy at distances up to 150 yards. During our tests, the rifle performed flawlessly with a variety of ammunition, including CCI Maxi-Mag and Hornady V-Max. Groupings were tight, averaging 1.5 inches at 100 yards with a Vortex 4-12x scope.  We will write an in-depth article with details on what we had to do to alleviate light primer strikes, feeding issues, and extraction failures.

The Model 202 boasts a precision-crafted 16" 416R stainless steel match-grade barrel, threaded for attachments and protected with a thread cap. Its ergonomic, over-molded Hogue stock offers modern comfort with a classic look, complete with integrated sling mounts for added versatility. The barrel, featuring a .920 diameter and an 11-degree target crown, ensures exceptional accuracy and performance.

Equipped with a high-performance proprietary bolt and an upgraded firing pin, the rifle is built for enhanced durability and precision. The rugged 7075 T6 aluminum receiver includes an integrated Picatinny rail, simplifying scope attachment.

This rifle comes with a detachable 9-round rotary magazine designed for reliable feeding, aided by its innovative rotor mechanism. To get it to feed reliably, I had to smooth down the steel feed lips.  Once filed and polished, I had a smooth-running rifle.  I had to repeat this with the 15-round magazine.  The flush-mounted magazine is easy to remove, thanks to a user-friendly release mechanism. A smooth, crisp trigger and patented side-charging handle further streamline the shooting experience.

Best of all, the 202 is compatible with some aftermarket Ruger components and magazines for .22 WMR rifles, making it a flexible option for shooters who value customization.
