Mystery Ranch 3-Day Assault Pack Review: A Classic Field Pack Made Better with the Right Add-Ons

The Mystery Ranch 3-Day Assault pack has earned its reputation the old-fashioned way: by being genuinely useful. It is not flashy, and it does not depend on gimmicks. What it offers instead is a thoughtfully designed, hard-use pack built around access, mobility, and load management. My version is a 2008 non-BVS model, and after all these years, it still proves why this pack has remained so respected.

At its core, the 3-Day Assault Pack is built for versatility. It features Mystery Ranch’s well-known 3-ZIP design, which allows fast access to the interior without the aggravation of endlessly digging through a traditional top-loading bag. It also uses the Futura Yoke for fit adjustment, includes interior hydration sleeves and ports, has side pockets for water bottles or other long items, and uses an internal HDPE frame sheet to give the pack structure and rigidity. At 33 liters and 4.4 pounds, it sits in a very useful middle ground: large enough for serious use, yet compact enough to remain mobile.

That alone would make it worth discussing. But what makes this particular setup especially interesting is the way the pack can be expanded through add-ons. In my opinion, that is where the 3-Day Assault Pack really begins to shine. With the right accessories, it stops feeling like a single bag and starts feeling more like a modular field system.

Base Pack Features

The Mystery Ranch 3-Day Assault was built around practical field use, and that shows in its layout. Some of the most notable core features include:

  • Classic 3-ZIP opening for fast and easy access
  • Two zippered lid pockets
  • VELCRO on the lid for identification or patches
  • Top zipper port for hydration tubes, cables, or antenna routing
  • Interior and exterior PALS webbing for MOLLE accessories
  • Side pockets that can accommodate a water bottle, tripod, or rifle butt
  • Stowable waist belt
  • Internal HDPE frame sheet
  • Sleeves and ports for up to three hydration reservoirs
  • Futura Yoke suspension system

This is the kind of pack design that rewards actual use. Nothing about it feels accidental. Even by modern standards, the overall layout still makes sense.

Add-On 1: Removable Stick-It

Mystery Ranch Removable Stick-It

The first accessory I want to highlight is the Removable Stick-It, and it is one of the smartest ways to expand the pack without dramatically changing its footprint.

the Stick-It as a latch-on external expansion panel

Mystery Ranch designed the Stick-It as a latch-on external expansion panel. In practical terms, it gives you a place to secure bulky or awkward items outside the main compartment. That could mean a helmet, a rain layer, a poncho, or any other piece of gear that you want quickly accessible without sacrificing internal organization.

What makes it especially useful is that it is not just a flat panel. It uses expandable contouring pleats to wrap around larger items, and the built-in HDPE sheet gives it enough rigidity to remain functional while still flexing as needed. It also uses Auto Lock buckles and snap attach loops for integration with the pack’s bottom daisy chain.

  • Weight: 0.6 lb
  • Dimensions: 15" x 10.5"
  • Material: 500D CORDURA with DWR and PU coatings

On a pack like the 3-Day Assault, the Stick-It is a natural fit. It adds usable exterior capacity while keeping the pack lean and adaptable.

Add-On 2: Daypack Lid

The Daypack Lid may be the most interesting accessory in terms of modularity

The Daypack Lid may be the most interesting accessory in terms of modularity. It does add storage, but it also adds options.

This detachable lid provides 900 cubic inches of additional capacity, or about 14.7 liters, which is no small increase. It uses two separate compartments for better organization, and the front pocket can hold up to a 100 oz hydration reservoir with a hose port. The real standout feature, though, is the hidden shoulder strap assembly, which lets the lid function as a small daypack on its own.

That is where this add-on becomes more than a storage pouch. It gives you the ability to separate essential gear from the main pack and move with a lighter load when needed. Whether you think of that in terms of scouting, short movement, sustainment gear, or general flexibility, it is a meaningful upgrade.

The Daypack lid can be worn as a backpack

  • Weight: 1 lb
  • Volume: 900 cu-in
  • Dimensions: 14" x 13.5" x 5"
  • Material: 500D CORDURA with DWR and PU coatings
  • Made in the USA
  • Berry Compliant

The Daypack Lid reinforces the idea that the 3-Day Assault is not just a backpack. It is a configurable system.

Add-On 3: RFAK

Mystery Ranch RFAK IFAK

The last add-on is the RFAK, and in many ways, it is the most function-driven accessory of the three.

The RFAK is a compact individual first aid kit with MOLLE attachment, a single buckle opening, and a quick-access pull tab that allows one-handed deployment. Once opened, the removable inner bundle gives you two mesh pockets, multiple tie-down points, and a layout that can be adjusted to suit your medical loadout.

This is important because medical gear should not be an afterthought. A pack can have all the organization in the world, but if your first aid kit is buried inside the main bag beneath clothing or sustainment gear, that organization is not helping much. The RFAK solves that problem by putting critical gear outside the main compartment in a pouch designed for rapid, repeatable access.

  • Volume: 60 cu-in
  • Dimensions: 5.75" x 7" x 2.5"
  • Material: 500D CORDURA with DWR and PU coatings
  • Water-repellent, IR-compliant YKK zippers
  • Made in the USA
  • Berry Compliant

For range work, preparedness, vehicle setups, or backcountry use, the RFAK adds real value. It is one of those accessories that earns its place.

The Mystery Ranch 3-Day Assault remains an excellent pack on its own. The design is practical, the access is outstanding, and the suspension and internal structure give it a stable, capable feel that cheaper packs rarely match.

But the real strength of the platform becomes more obvious when you add the right accessories.

The Removable Stick-It adds flexible exterior storage.  The Daypack Lid adds volume and standalone utility.  The RFAK adds fast-access medical organization.

Together, they do not just make the pack bigger. They make it more capable.

That is why this 2008 non-BVS 3-Day Assault still deserves attention. It is not simply a well-made pack from a respected brand. It is a durable, adaptable field pack that can still hold its own, especially when paired with add-ons that expand what it can do.

For anyone who appreciates gear that is built with purpose, that is a combination worth paying attention to.
