Historical Context of the Rhodesian Recon Vest

Eagle Industries has long been a respected name in the tactical gear industry, known for producing high-quality equipment that meets the rigorous demands of military and civilian professionals. The Rhodesian Recon Vest is no exception. Design and Features

Material and Construction

The Rhodesian Recon Vest is constructed from heavy-duty materials, typically 1000D Cordura nylon, ensuring longevity and resistance to wear and tear. The stitching is reinforced at critical points to withstand the stresses of combat and field use. The vest's design also includes mesh panels for enhanced breathability, making it comfortable for prolonged wear in various climates.  Our model is coyote brown, it came to us new from Rhodesian Recon Vest at Army Navy Outdoors

Modular Configuration

One of the standout features of the Rhodesian Recon Vest is its modularity. It is equipped with an array of PALS (Pouch Attachment Ladder System) webbing, allowing users to customize the vest with various pouches and accessories to suit their specific mission requirements. This adaptability is crucial for professionals who carry different equipment based on their operational role.

Storage and Accessibility

The vest boasts multiple pouches and compartments strategically placed for easy access. These include:

  • Magazine Pouches: Designed to hold standard rifle magazines, these pouches ensure that ammunition is readily accessible.
  • Utility Pouches: Perfect for carrying essential gear such as medical supplies, communication devices, and other small tools.
  • Admin Pouch: Often located on the chest bib, this pouch is ideal for documents, maps, chem lights, and other critical items that need to be accessed quickly.
  • Hydration Compatibility: The Rhodesian Recon Vest does not have a built-in hydration bladder pocket.  Users can wear a hydration carrier pack or canteen pouch (with canteen) to stay hydrated without compromising mobility.

The storage compartment runs the entire length of the rig.  Inside is an elastic strap used to secure various items such as field books, maps, and other various pieces of gear.  Present is a generous amount of loop (hook and loop aka VELCRO) material for hook-backed gear.  This compartment is handy for storing leather gloves, carefully folded shemaghs, and ponchos (tight, but doable).

Comfort and Fit

The vest is designed with adjustable straps and buckles, enabling users to tailor the fit to their body size and shape. This adjustability ensures a secure and comfortable fit, reducing fatigue during extended missions. Additionally, the shoulder straps are padded to distribute weight evenly, further enhancing comfort.  The bib, when stored, is barely noticeable and does not add discomfort. A generous amount of straps allows for fit adjustment of the vest over a wide range of clothing from base layers to the extreme cold layers (USMC Happy Suit).  The Beyond Clothing L4-L6 rain jacket is another favorite piece of gear. It is no longer manufactured but can be found on eBay from time to time.  The current build for Beyond is the A6 Rain Jacket and pants.

The inside of the vest features a mesh pocket that can hold a 10x12 (11x13 could possibly fit) level 4 armor plate.  Sewn on each side of the mesh pocket are strips of elastic that will allow for larger and smaller plates.  A generous strap with buckle and hook and loop tape secure the plate.  This section is used for gear storage when a plate is not mounted. Drain holes are present on the bottom of the vest.

Plates we have tested fitted to fit this vest are LA Police Gear Level 4, and Guard Dog Level 4 armor plates.

The Rhodesian Recon Vest (RRV), widely recognized among early Global War on Terror (GWOT) veterans, is celebrated for its utility and modularity. Introduced in 2002, just as the GWOT was gaining momentum, the RRV quickly became a staple for many. Over its 11-year service life, the vest saw only minor modifications, with the most significant changes occurring between the 2002 and 2003 versions.

The original 2002 RRV featured a 1-inch backstrap that disconnected on a single side, lacked a hook and loop strap for securing hard armor plates, and did not include a loop field within the main pocket. However, by 2003, these elements were revised: the 1-inch strap was replaced with a more robust 1.5-inch strap that could disconnect from either side, and the addition of the hard armor plate retaining strap and loop field made the vest more adaptable to evolving combat needs.

Although the RRV underwent changes in color and material over time, its core design remained consistent from 2003 onward. The original khaki color was expanded in 2004 with the introduction of Ranger Green and Coyote Brown. Later, in late 2006/early 2007, Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP) and Desert Digital II (DGII)/AOR 1 were added, with the final color variation, Multicam, introduced around 2009/2010.

Early versions of the RRV were constructed from 1000D material, but with the adoption of digital camouflage patterns, the vest was redesigned using 500D material. This change, aimed at reducing weight, marked the transition to what became known as the V2 RRV.  The design of the RRV was a success and served as an inspiration for many companies to produce similar vests and clones.

The double single magazine pouches attached to the vest were manufactured by Fire Force USA, each holding two MAGPUL GEN2 PMAG magazines.  The canteen pouch manufacturer is The Specialty Group, INC.  The NSN# 8465-01-532-2303.  Inside the pouch is a canteen, canteen cup, and canteen cup stove.  Also attached is the USMC IFAK first aid trauma kit.

Pictured above is an Eagle Industries signal flare pouch.  I carry useful items such as the Streamlight Sidewinder Military Compact II flashlight, paracord, and a small fire kit.  A signal pouch is an excellent choice for organizing a variety of small gear. It's versatile enough to hold small toolsUSB computer cords, medical supplies, and more. If you need to carry signal equipment, this pouch is ideal, with its interior featuring multiple elastic loops originally designed for pen flares but capable of accommodating larger items. The MOLLE backing allows easy attachment to a bag, belt, or vest, making it a great option for an admin pouch or an all-purpose gear pouch with countless uses.
